Dr. Rafat (Rani) Abbasi, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

Dr. Abbasi's special interests include male infertility, endometriosis, immunology of pregnancy, and assisted reproductive technologies. She is also involved in ongoing research in pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and sperm separation for sex selection (MICROSORT).
Dr. Abbasi was awarded her medical degree from the University of Sind in Karachi, Pakistan. She completed her residency training at
St. Joseph's Hospital in Towson, MD and her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at
Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. During her fellowship, she was the recipient of several awards recognizing the excellence of her research.
Dr. Abbasi is certified by the
American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Reproductive Endocrinology, as well as obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Abbasi served in the United States Army for ten years and was the Chief of Endocrinology at
Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. She then held the position of Director of the In Vitro Fertilization Program at the
University of Texas Medical Center in Houston.
Dr. Abbasi serves as a clinical consultant for the
National Institutes of Health in Bethesda and is appointed at
Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She has privileges at
Virginia Hospital Center and
Suburban Hospital in Maryland. Dr. Abbasi is a member of
American Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and
The Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology. She is also a member of
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Inclusive of her practice in Reproductive Endocrinology, Dr.
Abbasi is currently chair for the Department of Gynecology at
Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Abbasi's recent professional recognition includes being
listed in
in the Washingtonian Magazine's Top Doctors 2008.
Dr. Abbasi practices medicine in several languages including English, French, and Urdu.
